I Challenge You

I Challenge You As decision day draws nearer, “who” questions are taking priority. “Who will get in? What happens to the people who don’t? Who will I become if I get in? Who will I be, who will I become, if I don’t?” First, I think it’s important to consider why people apply to MIT. My primary reason for wanting to come â€" and the primary reason of everyone I have spoken to about this (both current students and friends who were rejected) â€" was not the fear of being unable to succeed without MIT, but rather a hope that MIT would provide me with an extraordinary experience en route to my success.  Comments like “don’t worry, you’ll still succeed” and “you’ll be great wherever you go” are well-intentioned, but therefore miss their target, because they do not recognize where disappointment stems from. I never thought that failing to get into MIT would mean failing at life. Rather, I thought that getting in would mean having access to unique resources and unique opportunities. A close friend of mine, who was rejected, tells me that he was hurt and disappointed not because he believed he could no longer succeed, but because he lost the chance to have an MIT undergraduate experience. I want to address that particular concern (although perhaps some of you do believe that attending MIT is the only path to success, which is a topic for another post.) Ive been immersed in this place for six months. You’re probably sick of hearing that MIT is what it is because of the people who go here, but its true: MIT is what it is because the people here create their own experience. They fill what would otherwise be a bunch of (not particularly aesthetically pleasing) buildings with energy, personality, and cool ideas. The individual creates his own experience at the Institvte: he takes advantages of the resources that are here, and creates the resources that are not. The process of making what you can from a situation doesn’t require a specific setting. I would never suggest that its easy to recreate an MIT experience (whatever that even means) because I know that youd never believe me. But I will venture to challenge every one of you those who are admitted, and those who are not to concentrate on what you wanted out of an MIT experience when you applied. Hopefully, it was more than the chance to physically walk down a specific hallway, or take a specific class taught by a specific person. I trust that there were clubs you wanted to join, fields you wanted to explore, dreams you wanted to realize. Whatever it is you wanted: hold onto it as tightly as you can. The hard part in realizing those hopes comes after pi day, not before it excelling and being happy will be a challenge for those of you who attend MIT, as well as for those of you who do not. I challenge you to bring your plans and dreams with you, wherever you end up: to resist abandoning them because you’ve been accepted and your life is complete, or because you’ve been rejected and your life is over. To make them happen, wherever you go. You are guaranteed to meet hurdles and obstacles on the way to getting what you want out of college. Not because of where you are, but because of who you are, I challenge you to climb over them, dig through them, beat them down, and not allow yourself to be defined by the school you attend. Addition: I want to draw attention to Spencers comment, since I think its a great idea. Fellow commenters, what say you we post those dreams and plans here to make sure theyre not forgotten after pi day? Ill start: To have something of my design land on Mars. Id love to hear them.

My top ACT English strategy tip

Just to  be clear, this is a post about strategy   if you dont know the actual grammar, or you have difficulty understanding when to use different types of transitions, it wont save you. And if you fall into that category and are looking to do some last minute cramming, you should probably start with my complete SAT and ACT grammar rules. But assuming you have a reasonable grasp of the actual content and do not regularly run out of time, this is the most important piece of advice I can offer you. It might not sound like much, but it can have very significant consequences; Ive seen it affect students English scores by as many as three points. So here goes: after youve finished an ACT English passage, stop and take a brief break (anywhere from 10-30 seconds) before you begin the next passage. Make yourself stop before every new passage, regardless of whether you feel tired, and even if youre a feeling slightly concerned about time. I realize that given the time constraints of the test, that might sound like very counter-intuitive advice, so heres why: I’ve looked at a lot of ACT score reports over the past eight or so years, and after seeing certain number of them, I started to noticed something interesting. Often, a student would miss at most a couple of English questions during the first half of the section, but during the second half, there would be a sharp drop-off in performance. In addition, there was frequently a cluster of incorrect answers right around #70, regardless of whether the student was running out of time. After some puzzling over this oh-so-intriguing phenomenon, I had a light bulb moment. There was nothing inherently more difficult about passages 3-5, I realized; students were just getting tired. And when the end was in sight, their focus would disappear, and they would crash and burn. Spending that length of time staring at all those tiny commas and semicolons and colons and periods could make anyone a little cuckoo, regardless of how well they knew the test. Eventually, I came up with what seemed to be a reasonable solution: I asked students to start taking breaks between passages. Very short breaks, mind you, but breaks nonetheless. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I encountered some pushback. Students felt that they were on a roll, that they would lose time, that they didn’t want to interrupt something that seemed to be working. Those were entirely understandable objections. The problem was that when these students crashed straight through from question #1 to question #75, they always, always lost just a few extra points unnecessarily. So I insisted: they had to force themselves to stop for even a few seconds, even if they didn’t feel tired. Whats more, they had to do it before every single passage no skipping. The  goal was to do everything possible to  prevent the fatigue from accumulating to the point where it would start to affect their scores. And it worked. Even if students resisted at first, they came around pretty easily once they saw that taking regular breaks got them from the consistent 29-30 range to the consistent 32-33 range. Again, to reiterate: there is virtually no way to answer all 75 questions in an ACT English section without accumulating some degree of mental fatigue. Even if you’re not aware that your brain is getting tired, trust me, it is. The change will be subtle at first, so subtle you probably wont even be aware of it, but it will happen. Your reaction times will get a fraction of a second slower, and you will have to focus harder just to understand  what each question is asking. You will also be more likely to miss key information that you would have noticed easily 30 minutes earlier.   If, on the other hand, you take a breather between passages, some of that mental clutter tends to dissipate. Youll not only end the English section in better shape than you would have otherwise, but youll have more energy left for the rest of the exam.   So please, do yourself a favor. Stop for just a couple of seconds and let your mind reset. The ACT is  a marathon, not a sprint, and you need to pace yourself accordingly. Close your eyes, look out the window, meditate whatever. Just allow yourself that tiny mental break. It may seem like such a small thing, but it can have big consequences.

Critique Workshop Article Critique Example

Sample Article Critique Article critique requires students to make a critical analysis of another paper, often an essay, book or journal article. Regardless of your major whether it be psychology or economics, for example, you are likely to perform this kind of assignment at some point. For students, it is a great way to explore the research process itself, interpret its results and discuss their impact. There are several formatting styles, including the Modern Language Association (MLA) format and the American Psychological Association (APA) format, that may be applied when writing critique papers. Each of the styles has its particular rules and guidelines, and unless you follow them carefully, your chances to get low grades for the paper are rather high.   In the sample article below, we will use one of the most popular and recommended by professors around the globe formats APA style. Article Critique. Multinational Enterprises, Development and Globalization: Some Clarifications and a Research Agenda The involvement of multinational enterprises (MNEs) in domestic markets has become a key component of the development policy of many developing countries. MNEs can have a decisive impact on the development of countries, but the effectiveness of an FDI-based development strategy depends on a number factors. Article ‘Multinational Enterprises, Development, and Globalization: Some clarifications and a research agenda’ by R. Narula and J. Dunning published in Oxford Development Studies provides in-depth analysis on effects of economic globalization for developing countries that follow a strategy based on attracting MNE investments. The authors use analysis as well as principles of macro- and microeconomics to relate to the subject of MNEs and development, and they try to find a conclusive understanding on how to explain the success of some regions or countries in promoting economic growth, and the failure of others. Narula and Dunning point out that the MNEs can have a decisive influence on the development of countries. This notion is entirely reasonable, and particularly true considering global imbalances. Nevertheless, though proved more effective, the involvement of such corporations is not the only development strategy that is available to developing countries. The authors do not provide an adequate explanation that only together with other forms of local involvement of MNEs, direct foreign investment can be a direct path to structural change and will help break the vicious circle of poverty and weak development. There are also some other questionable issues that are concluded in this article. In their review of development strategies of countries, Narula and Dunning provide an example of Asian economies. The authors stress that Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea were the most effective in the involvement of MNEs after the Second World War. These countries pursued a restrictive FDI policy, identifying the priority of technology transfer, licensing and reverse engineering as mechanisms for obtaining foreign knowledge. At the same time, Narula and Dunning provide successful examples neither of other regions nor liberalized FDI policies. It is also worth mentioning that the world has changed significantly over the last three decades, which means that conducting such strategies today will not necessarily lead to the same results. One factor not addressed in the paper is that FDI flows are not all the same with each other. The quality of FDI received by the country is as important as the quantity. The quality relates to the MNEs investment motives, mandate, and autonomy of the branches, and this will have a direct impact on the potential of secondary effects from the MNE. Therefore, a feasible policy towards FDI should not be exclusively linked to capital investment, but also consider strengthening the local MNEs roots. Taking everything into account, I can conclude that Narula and Dunning give some interesting insights and well thought out on the subject of  multinational enterprises’ effects on developing countries. The article provides a substantial amount of data and includes some graphic illustrations. Nonetheless, for a complete evaluation to be made, the authors should focus more on the quality of the investment flows and their secondary effects as well as determine recommendations for different types of developing countries, considering their economic, social and political systems, on the strategies towards MNEs they are to follow. African Americans And The Criminal Justice System Essay

There are many ways the criminal justice system plays a huge role in the discrimination against all people of color. Mostly, there are a wide range of studies within the African American communities that expresses concern, prejudice, and even racial profiling in the criminal justice system pertaining to blacks. Judges, jurors, police officers, and even marriages are key roles of the societal disadvantages African Americans have. African Americans are even being arrested more than any other race in America. With societal disadvantages, how can African Americans be striving citizens in America? One way African Americans have a disadvantage in the criminal justice system is the arrest rates. Based on the statistics given, African Americans seem more likely to be targeted fo r an arrest. The population for the African American community only makes up for 13 percent of the United States, and out of that statistic, most them will be arrested.
